Just warming up.

Re: the "other" pile: Sorry, [info]grandlarseny! I ended up reading the “Trigun” volumes instead of drawing from them when I took them off of the bookshelf to use as reference, so I'm still working on it. Was reminded of how much I love the series though. And Vash's hairstyle changes way too many times througout the series.

It's amazing how some artists start out drawing their comics like third graders and eventually graduate into professional artists by the end of their comic series; Hirano comes to mind.

I assume you're referring to Hirano of "Hellsing" fame? Hmm, I didn't think he was *that* bad when he started out. His style was messy but in a stylish way. Speaking of which, I've lost track of that series...

Yeah, many comic artists really do evolve with respect to their drawing styles over the course of a series and furthermore their career. Then, there are those who don't improve at all but are great storytellers nonetheless. Most examples of this latter type don't get translated into English though, unfortunately.
